TENNIS FOR THE
BEGINNER.
The series for the beginner is now
concluded.
It is important to get out there and practice and play all
that you have learnt.
Next spring, we will look at the next stage in the
learning process- taking the
strokes to another level and looking at more
difficult things we have not yet
tried.
On the playing arena, in
archives you will find my complete manual on doubles
play, this will give you
a lot of the tactical side of
tennis.
Tip of the
Month.
September Tips of the month.
*****************************************
Want to get the edge on your
opponent!
One certain way is to take the ball early, hit the ball on the rise, it takes away
their time to
recover.
Go out and practice by standing inside the baseline and have your partner hit the
ball
deep at your feet. With practice
you will improve your response
time
incredibly.
To
get your timing spot on, start by just catching the ball with your hand, then
move on using the
racquet.
Perfecting the volley.
One of the major problems many
average players have when volleying
is to reach out with their racquet to the
ball. i.e. stretching to reach the
ball.
This in effect puts them off
balance, unable to control the shot and not
in a position to move further to
the ball, if it is not within the contact
zone.
There are at least two
important elements in performing a quality volley.
1/. With the racquet
in the high ready position make a unit turn - this
means just turning the
upper body to the side of the arriving ball. No
need todo anything with the
racquet at this stage, it will already be
facing down court.
2/. Good
footwork to get to the ball. A lot will depend on how far you
now have to
move to reach the ball.
I have found from experience that the
best way to move to the ball is to
take an initial very small step out with
the foot nearest to the ball, then:
If the ball is close, you just need
to step diagonally forward with the
opposite foot.
However, if you
need to move quickly to a ball further away, I have
found that by doing a
cross over step, you are better balanced and can
then do lots of quick steps
to reach a more difficult ball.
I get my players to work on this without
a ball: they stand in the ready
position at the net, take a small stepto the
right and a cross over step,
do a fake volley, recover to the centre and do
the same to the left.
Repeat the movement a number of times and build up a
rhythm.
Drill of the
month - for squads
SERIOUS DRILL – *****
Passing shot and volley winner.
Crosscourt passing shot, movement, winning
volley.
Groundstroke
players line up behind the
baseline in the centre.
Volley players start
at the service line either
side of the pro.
Pro feeds to deuce court and
volleyers close
into the net. A moves to the right and hits a
crosscourt
passing shot. Volleyer C intercepts
passing shot and hits a short angle volley down
the line.
The drill is repeated to the ad side for the next
player D
who volleys crosscourt and B cut out
the shot.
Players rotate ends after a set
number of hits
or by time.
Serious Drill - Over
the Pro. ****
*
Offensive and defensive lob practice.
Lob
over the net player.
Players are lined up behind baseline in the
centre. Target is
placed deep in the corner.
Pro feeds ball deep and wide to the deuce
corner. A
runs wide and hits high lob over pro’s
head to target.
If the ball
does not clear the pro’s reach up, the
ball is returned to player for
another chance.
Pro indicates whether they want defensive flat
or
topspin lob.
Alternatives. Switch sides and do the same on
the
backhand side.
Player gets two balls – hits first crosscourt
Groundstroke and
then a lob.
Can be done as an individual drill
with continuous
feeds and lobs.
Two Clear Points. ****
Pressure Game.
Play a normal game of Singles or Doubles.
Instead of regular scoring, score points
1 – 2 – 3
etc.
The same player serves for the whole
game.
However, the only way to win the game is to
be
two points ahead.
To make it more difficult, make it three
points
ahead.

you hope to succeed.
Success is the result of good judgement.
Good judgement is the
